Hello there,
First thing first: welcome to Old Soul Club! I hope this letter finds you well.
I named my mail club Old Soul Club because I think of myself as an old soul: I’m an introvert, highly sensitive and a deep thinker with a rich inner life. Small talk isn’t really my thing so I think of Old Soul Club as a space to share my thoughts on philosophical ideas through the lens of Art. At least that’s the idea for now.
As an old soul I imagine I have spent many lives on our blue planet, and possibly on other planets or realms as well. I remember being around 10 years old and being fascinated by the night sky and wondering if I perhaps had landed here by mistake. I had a lovely childhood, not perfect of course, and yet a part of me didn’t feel like I belonged. Imagination was the best part of being human: creating worlds to play within, building pillow forts that became castles, writing mini plays, drawing dragons, and talking to the trees. There were no limits to what could be imagined and it all felt so real. As an adult, my imagination hasn't been nearly as present. I still use it in my creative work, sure, but it’s not omnipresent like it is when we are children. I wonder if you feel that too? Like somewhere along the way, imagination became frivolous or something. What if it's actually a superpower, one we could use to shape our day-to-day experience, not just creative work? Neuroscience backs this up in a way, too: the brain can't fully tell the difference between what's real and what's imagined. Knowing that changed how I see things. Something you might not know about me is that almost 10 years ago I went through a severe depression. It was one of the hardest and most pivotal times in my life. As I healed, I also went down some pretty deep rabbit holes about the nature of reality. My perspective on life has expanded tremendously since then, and in the last couple of years I've tried to translate some of what I've learned into my work as an artist: the ribbons, the eyes, and the keys in some recent paintings form a visual language that nods to the observer, to energy, to opening portals into a world where imagination is creation. It’s a work in progress and ever-evolving, but I’m looking forward to seeing where things go. So until next month,
Much love,
Isabelle
P.S: I hope you enjoy the art print, sticker, and original mini painting! Thank you for being a founding member of Old Soul Club - I appreciate you!:)
